Aikido of Santa Cruz is a large and lively dojo on the central coast of California, dedicated to Aikido training as an integrated physical, mental, and spiritual discipline based on the teachings of Morihei Ueshiba Osensei. We are a nonprofit, educational organization, serving the community since 1982.
Our chief instructor Linda Holiday, 6th dan, began her Aikido training in 1970 and undertook several years of intensive training in Japan before stepping into leadership in Santa Cruz in 1977. She maintains connections with Japan while encouraging relationships of friendship and mutual respect between diverse Aikido dojos throughout the world. Senior instructor Glen Kimoto, 5th dan, also began his training over 40 years ago and has been teaching regularly in Santa Cruz since the 1970′s. Numerous senior black belts also teach classes at our dojo and share their love of the art.
Aikido of Santa Cruz offers classes every day in a beautiful and spacious training facility. Our dojo’s long history has resulted in a community of enthusiastic Aikidoists of all levels who pursue the study of Aikido with depth and sincerity. Women and men train together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and support. In addition to a full program of training for adults, we have three popular programs for young people: ages 6-9, 9-12, and 13-18. For adults new to Aikido, we have a supportive two-month Beginning Aikido program that covers the fundamental skills and philosophy of the art. Visitors are welcome!
Aikido of Santa Cruz is pleased to host numerous seminars each year with a variety of guest instructors. Our annual Santa Cruz Aikido Summer Retreat, in July, draws together students and teachers from many different dojos and lineages in Aikido. We hold an Aikido Summer Camp for Young People (6-12) in the first week of August. An annual Women’s Aikido Seminar takes place each spring. Details of our rich and varied schedule of classes and special events can be found on our website, <www.aikidosantacruz.org>.
Aikido of Santa Cruz has been greatly honored to host numerous visits of Motomichi Anno Sensei, 8th dan shihan, current chief instructor of the Kumano Juku Dojo in Shingu, Japan. Anno Sensei is our chief instructor Linda Holiday’s primary sensei. He is a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido, and conveys the teachings of Osensei with heart, humility, and authenticity. Aikido of Santa Cruz has produced 2 DVDs which feature Anno Sensei along with three other instructors from the Santa Cruz Aikido Summer Retreat (Mary Heiny, Jack Wada, Linda Holiday): “Aikido no Kokoro: The Heart of Aikido” (2008), and “Carry Aikido Forward” (2011), available on Amazon.com.
“Aikido is not a technique to fight with or defeat an enemy. It is the way to harmonize the world and make humanity one family.” –Morihei Ueshiba Osensei, founder of Aikido
